History



  • 1949 The School of Science was established, which was comprised of four departments: Mathematics (four chairs), Physics (five chairs), Chemistry (four chairs), and Biology (three chairs).
  • 1967 The Department of Earth Sciences was established within the School of Science.
  • 1995 All five departments were reorganized to consist of thirteen chairs.
  • 2005 The Center of Quantum Universe affiliated to the university was established.
  • 2006 The Frontier Scientist Special Course Promotion Office was established.
  • 2016 The Center of Quantum Universe affiliated to the university was abolished.

Department of Mathematics

  • 1949 The Department of Mathematics was established, which was comprised of four chairs: Analysis, Algebra, Geometry, and Topology.
  • 1960 The chairs of Practical Mathematics and General Mathematics were added. 1962 The chair of Analysis II was added.
  • 1964 The chairs of General Mathematics and Analysis II were transferred to the Faculty of Liberal Arts.
  • 1994 The chair of Practical Mathematics was closed, and the chair of Mathematical Logic was added.
  • 1995 Five chairs (Analysis, Algebra, Geometry, Topology, and Mathematical Logic) were reorganized to consist of three chairs: Algebra and Mathematics of Computation, Geometry and Topology, and Analysis and Applicable Mathematics.
  • 2015 Three chairs (Algebra and Mathematics of Computation, Geometry and Topology, and Analysis and Applicable Mathematics) were reorganized to consist of three chairs: Analysis, Algebra, and Geometry.

Department of Physics

  • 1949 The Department of Physics was established, which was comprised of five chairs: Theoretical Physics, Experimental Physics, Mathematical Physics, Atomic Physics, and Applied Physics.
  • 1960 The chair of General Physics was added.
  • 1964 The chair of General Physics was transferred to the Faculty of Liberal Arts. The chairs of Experimental Physics, Atomic Physics, and Applied Physics were renamed Electromagnetism, Nuclear Physics, and Solid-state Physics, respectively.
  • 1970 The chair of Magnetochemistry was added.
  • 1991 The chair of Quantum Physics was added.
  • 1995 Seven chairs (Theoretical Physics, Electromagnetism, Mathematical Physics, Nuclear Physics, Solid-state Physics, Magnetochemistry, and Quantum Physics) were reorganized to consist of three chairs: Fundamental Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, and Quantum Physics.

Department of Chemistry

  • 1949 The Department of Chemistry was established, which was comprised of four chairs: Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Analytical Chemistry.
  • 1955 The chair of Polymer Chemistry was added.
  • 1960 The chair of General Chemistry was added.
  • 1964 The chair of General Chemistry was transferred to the Faculty of Liberal Arts.
  • 1973 The chair of Molecular Organic Chemistry was added.
  • 1994 The chair of Polymer Chemistry was closed, and the chairs of Functional Chemistry and Structural Chemistry were added.
  • 1995 Seven chairs (Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Molecular Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Functional Chemistry, and Structural Chemistry) were reorganized to consist of three chairs: Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Analytical and Inorganic Chemistry.

Department of Biology

  • 1949 The Department of Biology was established, which comprised of three chairs: Botany, Genetics, and Zoology.
  • 1952 The chairs of Botany and Zoology were renamed Plant Morphology and Animal Morphology, respectively. The chair of Animal Physiology was added.
  • 1957 The chair of Plant Physiology was added.
  • 1964 The chair of Genetics was renamed Genetics and Cell Biology.
  • 1992 The chair of Molecular Biology was added.
  • 1995 Six chairs (Plant Morphology, Plant Physiology, Genetics and Cell Biology, Animal Morphology, Animal Physiology, and Molecular Biology) were reorganized to consist of two chairs: Molecular Biology and Integrative Biology.

Department of Earth Sciences

  • 1967 The Department of Earth Sciences was established, which was comprised of one chair: Mineralogy.
  • 1968 The chair of Geology was added.
  • 1969 The chair of Geophysics was added.
  • 1970 The chair of Geochemistry was added.
  • 1995 Four chairs (Mineralogy, Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry) were reorganized to consist of two chairs: Earth and Planetary Sciences, and Physical Geology and Geochemistry.
  • 2012 Two chairs (Earth and Planetary Sciences, and Geology and Geochemistry) were reorganized to consist of four chairs: Dynamic Geology, Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interior, Geochemistry and Cosmochemistry, and Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Sciences.

Ushimado Marine Institute

  • 1951 The Ushimado Marine Institute was established.
  • 1953 The Ushimado Marine Institute was moved to Tamano.
  • 1954 The Ushimado Marine Institute was reorganized to be a training facility that was attached to the university.
  • 1979 The Ushimado Marine Institute was moved to Ushimado.

Reserach Laboratory for Surface Science

  • 1952 The Applied Optics Institute was established.
  • 1955 The Applied Optics Institute was reorganized to be the Surface Science Institute.
  • 1971 The Surface Science Institute was reorganized to be the Research Laboratory for Surface Science, which was attached to the university. The Section of Thin Film and Surface Physics was added.
  • 1975 The Section of Film Powders and Surface Chemistry was added.
