The Dean's Welcome

Welcome to the web pages of the School of Science, Okayama University. I am very pleased to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves.

The School of Science was established in 1949, for better natural science education and research. It consists of five departments that cover the classical science subjects of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and earth sciences, along with two affiliated facilities—a marine laboratory, and a laboratory for surface science .

Prof. Dr. ICHIOKA Masanori
Dean of School of Science

There are approximately 100 academic and 25 administrative and technical staff members, and 600 undergraduate students in the School of Science. Most of our main buildings are concentrated in the Tsushima campus, and are all equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for science education and research. Apart from this, the marine laboratory is located at Ushimado, 30 km east of the Tsushima campus.

Our mission is to expand our knowledge of nature that could be helpful for understanding natural phenomena occurring in the universe, including human beings, which would be beneficial for society through research as well as education.

Each department provides a 4-year undergraduate program, which is designed to impart basic knowledge of science and research skills. In the undergraduate course, we are prepared to provide classes or laboratory work ranging from the introductory to the highly advanced levels.

In the fourth academic year, all students must select a research project and conduct experiments under the direction of individual faculty members; they are also expected to finish their undergraduate theses. Introductory lectures for undergraduate students regarding higher levels of study are also organized by each department, which allows a smooth connection to the graduate course. As a matter of fact, many graduates from the School of Science go on to graduate schools at Okayama University or other universities, expecting to obtain more advanced knowledge and research experience, and to broaden their outlook.

All the faculty members here have dedicated their lives to exploring the frontiers of science, and to discovering basic principles of the universe. We are happy to educate students who are interested in various fields, and are eager for wide-ranging knowledge and techniques.

Through this web page we hope to provide you with details about the education programs currently available in our faculty. I invite you to join the School of Science, Okayama University, and explore the frontiers of science with us.
