　Excitation of the isomeric state through an optical transition requires us to tightly confine the nuclei in a well-controlled electronic state. Among other options, such as ion traps, VUV-transparent crystals appear to be suitable platforms. The research activities of the Thorium group in Vienna are centered about 229Th:CaF2 crystals. A number of studies have been performed to characterize the relevant properties of our home-grown CaF2 crystals, and I will report on the latest measurements.
